With Jerry’s admonitions ringing in his ears, Ryder donned concealable soft armor before leaving the office, instructing Fiona to do the same. They drove across town to the their first stop, but not before he pulled into a drive-through for more coffee. He handed one of the tall go-cups to Fiona, and she reached for it eagerly. “Oh, bless you. Our coffee maker died a few days ago. I haven’t had time to replace it.”

“How have you survived?” He was only half-joking. Caffeine kick-started his day. He could do without it if he needed to. But he made sure he didn’t need to.

“Morning Joe’s. It’s good, but by the time Kane and I both stop there for a week, we could have bought a new machine. Tomorrow, maybe.” She took a drink of the brew, her eyes sliding shut in pleasure.

“How are you two settling in?” He pulled out of the store lot and onto Main, which was surprisingly busy. Tourist season usually slowed a bit after school started, although weekends would continue to attract sightseers until early November, once fall foliage was no longer a draw.

“The apartment’s too small to completely unpack our things, but it’s okay for now. We’re on the hunt for a house. Supposed to look at a few this weekend.” She smiled at him. “I heard there was one for sale in your neighborhood. Construction skills necessary.”

“Yeah, I need to call the realtor, I guess. It won’t be in any shape to for a while.” He also hadn’t even thought about possible companies to take care of the repair work. He made a mental note to call XXX, Cady’s landlady. The woman had done a major remodeling job on the acreage after it got shot up last winter XXX, in the course of a warrant Cady had worked. He hadn’t imagined that a few months later, he’d endure the same.

“We’ll be looking for something smaller, at least until Kane finishes his M.A.”

Her husband’s job had brought them to the area, Ryder recalled, as he braked for a red

light. They’d bought a civil engineering consulting firm in town, and he was thankful for it. Garza’s objection to the woman was based on age and appearance alone. He had over thirty-five years on her, and had the same wait-and-see attitude toward all the youngest deputies.

He may have been right about one thing, Ryder thought as he pulled to the stop in front of a small bungalow on the east side of town. With her dark hair, startling blue eyes, and open manner, she did look more kindergarten teacher than police. But there the similarity stopped. Her references were impeccable, and she’d served in a city ten times the size of Waynesville. The fact that she was bi-lingual was a bonus. She’d impressed him so far, and Jerry would come around. You never knew when a deputy with a less-threatening appearance would be come in handy to de-escalate a situation.

“That’s an interesting color choice.”

The house bore a fresh coat of eye-popping yellow paint.
